Melchizedek Stefanescu and Uniting of the Principalities

Marius-Ioan Chindris

Abstract

The Union of the Principalities was a key event in Romanian history and played a significant role in the formation of the Romanian state. Melchisedec Stefanescu (1823-1892), leading figure of the age, participated actively in the front seeking the Unification of the Romanian Principalities and was one of the leading militants of the union, along with his contemporaries. His multilateral personality (scholar, priest and writer) was completed by that of a patriot. The conclusion of my article is that his role and involvement, far from being secondary, made possible the transition from tradition to modernity and progress. The research is mostly synchronous, analyzing the interaction between cultures in order to create a cultural diagnosis for the eighteenth century.
