Sustainable exploitation of natural resources and national security

Maria Constantinescu

Abstract

One of the biggest challenges for any of modern nation represents conscious, sustainable and durable development in accordance with its geographical, geopolitical and economical environment. This paper outlines the complex connections between the economic sector and national security, in case of countries with abundant natural resources. All of these countries were and/ or still are subject of interethnic conflicts due to their “luck” of being beneficiary of abundant natural resources. In the same time, all of them have a colonial heritage which is difficult to be surpassed, due to internal and external actions of new class of businessmen with new methods to spoil the countries resources. The concept of sustainable development is not new but seems to be very difficult to implement even in the developed countries. There are many models, plans, strategies, and actions which outlines the limits of our planet, or different regions or locations regarding to the available resources. All of them may be successful only by conscious understanding of the implications of unsustainable resource exploiting. Another way to success may be the diminishing of profit seeking by any means and a better distribution of the profit.
