How Does a Canadian Enterprise Respond to a Volatile Environment through the Co-Evolution of its Resources and its Capabilities?

Walter Gérard Amedzro St-Hilaire

Abstract

In the following study, we have deployed the capability life-cycle model to
understand the process of firm evolution in an uncertain and rapidly changing industry –
the Canadian private enterprise from 1995-2011. In this environment, capability selection
occurred at regular intervals, providing a natural experiment in the evolution of
capabilities. While we find broad support for the capability lifecycle model, the case
analysis also suggests that continuous interaction between four generic resources is a
central mechanism behind capability evolution throughout the lifecycle. It follows that
these resources are fundamental for business agility and the success of firms in uncertain
environments more generally.
