The article examines the variants of translation of the archaic lexeme “zеgzitsa” in the English versions of the outstanding literature monument of the period of Kievan Rus – epic poem “The Song of Igor's Campaign”. The author demonstrates how this obsolete word in the modern English-language interpretation is replaced by different images of birds (gull, seagull, cuckoo), as well as gives the viewpoints in modern controversy regarding to the meaning of the lexeme “zеgzitsa” meaning.
