Terrorism as Media Event

Abstract


When speaking about terrorism we usually include the mass media in the discussion because spreading the news and making people talk about terrorist attacks is part of the perpetrators plan. The process of communication, with the spread of mass media channels nowadays, has become vital to terrorism. And even if its goals surpass that of mere publicity, the best way to achieve them is by spreading fear. What is a media event and why does a terrorist act qualify as one? We will try to answer that question in the following article.
