The Emerging Digital Age and Copyright Protection in Nigeria: The Need To Strategize

Fabian Odoh, Godwin Emeka Ngwu

Abstract

Digital age emerged decades ago but recently, it started to disturb the traditional modes of copyright protection in Nigeria. A cursory look at the level of sophistication in digital advancement today, one will agree that we have finally arrived the digital age where new technology is busy pushing the older ones into extinction. Digital technology has facilitated the production, consumption and distribution of digital contents and has made significant contributions to e-commerce and also in checkmating infringements and piracy. It has been witnessed in every sphere of human endeavor but mostly felt in information and communication technology where it has transformed the landscape of business. Digitalization which would have been in the interest of copyright work turned out to be a clog in the wheel of progress as it concerns intellectual property protection. The inherent complicity in copyright was made more complex by the emergence of digitalization considering the extent it has been aiding and abating intellectual criminalities. Exploitation of copyright materials without permission or acknowledgement is easy considering the way and manner with which unauthorized users were assailing protected materials without hitch. Today there is yet no corresponding legal sophistication to keep to the pace of the technological growth in Nigeria.
